Who are we?

Saturday 25 December 2004 by Alternatives international

We are social and political movements struggling against neoliberalism, imperialism, social injustice and war. We are building solidarity between social movements at the local, national and international level. Our approach is both concrete (action-oriented) and intellectual (creating new paradigms). Neoliberalism is currently the dominant form of capitalism, against which several social movements have fought over the years under the banner of «socialism». However that banner has been partially destroyed with the collapse of the Berlin Wall and social movements all over the world are struggling to develop new alternatives.

Quick browsing

We are together for three main reasons:

  • The necessity to struggle at the local and international level in a coordinated fashion
  • The necessity to increase our participation in the debate over «alternatives», especially within the context of the World Social Forum
  • The necessity to help ourselves to assure our long-term political and financial viability.

How do we operate?

We have provisional structures that we will test for a few years. The basic structure is the permanent assembly, composed of delegates from each participating group. The assembly meets regularly and functions through cyberspace. We have a coordinating team whose mandate is to preside and organise the Assembly. And we have a small secretariat.

Our priorities

We have several projects on the move including:

  • Establishing a network of websites providing analysis and information servicing social movements struggling against neoliberalism.
  • Strengthening networks bringing together urban social movements.
  • Developing new initiatives for young activists through stages and exchange programmes.
  • Designing common approaches and strategies to input in the WSF process internationally and locally.
  • Developing new strategies to assure long-term financial viability.
